Sunday Sentiments-the value of quietness

Psalm 46:10

Be still...

How often in a day or week do you allow some purposeful quiet-time?
Just sitting still--no distractions...no talking...no electronics....
In today's world, the noise never stops. . .
banking, shopping, dining out,
a movie, and fueling our cars can be done at any time of day.
Add the convenience of the internet and anything can be taken care of
without ever leaving the comfort of our kitchen table.
Activity buzzes along, assaulting our senses, 24/7.

The noise has snuck in like a stealthy intruder.
We have invited it in to not just visit,
but to set up camp in our most intimate areas of house and home.

And we wonder why we are tired, and stressed and confused....

The Lord encourages, or perhaps,
commands us to be quiet.
Be still.

He knows we need the break.  To refresh, and be renewed.
He wants us to hear the quiet.
For in the quiet we hear our thoughts; and we hear Him in our thoughts.

The sound of silence is regenerating.

What can we do to practice this?
Practice turning off the tv, radio, phones, ipod, computer and gaming devices.
Get outside and walk...or just sit.
Read.
Pray.
Journal.
Dedicate a day to no noise...and see how your body and mind respond.

  1. Aimee...I so do enjoy doing this very thing...and I think it is important. I am noticing more and more just recently how the loud "background" noises grind on my nerves...my sanity. Loud TV, loud talking (or talk radio)...I mean how do some folks ever concentrate on anything. This noise takes away my peace and I find myselg craving the silence. Thank you for this reminder!
