Medallion painting--how-to

Medallions are a wonderful way to accent a chandelier 

and create vertical balance in a room.

My friend has a dining room with 20ft ceilings 

and bought a chandelier that was 6ft high by 4 ft wide.
HUGE!

When you want to show off a chandelier that big, 

you really need to have something substantial at the 

point where the fixture is hanging to create a balanced look.

That's where medallions come in so beautifully.  

You can find them at most home improvement stores, 

but there are larger and more intricate 

ones on-line at very reasonable prices.

This medallion is more than 3 ft wide!

They come plain white and I didn't want all the details to get lost way up on the high ceiling.

I used a wash of Annie Sloan Old White to give the medallion a nice finish.

Then used the dark wax 

and a chip brush to highlight the areas I wanted to show off.

I wiped off the wax and rubbed it to give it a burnished finish.

  Careful to highlight only the raised areas.

 The end result was a a more subtle look 

that highlighted the architetural elements of the room.

 And let the large chandelier be anchored visually to the ceiling 

but still be the star of the room.
